From Symbolic to Azure Emote

Kelly Conlon played bass on DEATH’s Symbolic, a defining release in the band’s catalogue. His career also includes recordings with Monstrosity and his work with Azure Emote, whose experimental approach opens up a different world of musical possibilities.

For this live interview, we will look beyond the album credits and explore Kelly’s experiences as a musician: how he joined DEATH, what it was like working with Chuck Schuldiner, and how he approached his bass parts on Symbolic.

We also plan to discuss the end of his time with DEATH, his connections with fellow musicians, and the creative choices that continue to shape his playing today.

What we plan to discuss

• Meeting Chuck Schuldiner and joining DEATH.
• The recording of Symbolic and Kelly’s contribution to its sound.
• Working with Gene Hoglan and Bobby Koelble.
• The circumstances surrounding the end of his time with DEATH.
• His musical journey through Monstrosity and beyond.
• Azure Emote, Cryptic Aura and his approach to experimental metal.
• His jazz, Motown and progressive rock influences, and how they inform his bass playing.
